Introduction to Contemporary Arts and Politics
This is a part-time summer course at bachelor level, introducing different practices and positions at the intersection of art and politics, focusing on how these concepts have been historically separated and contested. It runs June to August each year, with an application period in each Spring. Rather than relying on a pre-set theory, it examines examples of interaction between questions of the political and concrete instances of contemporary art, encouraging students to develop their own critical perspectives. Topics include the political imaginary, political agency in contemporary art, aesthetics in colonial-modernity, geopolitics of the art world, feminism, ecological practices, and more. The course features online discussions and occasional in-person sessions in various cities, with past collaborations including international scholars and artists.
