Commissioning & curating contemporary public art
This is a one-year, long-distance, part-time course, at advanced/masters level, introducing key practices and debates in working with art in the public realm. It runs January to December each year with an application period each Autumn. Commissioning and Curating Contemporary Public Art is a course that delves into the complexities of creating and managing public art in various contexts. It aims to foster dialogue around public culture, the public sphere, and the evolving role of public art in today’s complex social and political landscape. Through the course pertinent questions are discussed on the role of public art in shaping rural, urban, and exurban spaces, as well as its impact on communities, democracy, and the political imaginary. Students will examine the processes behind commissioning, curating, maintaining, and decommissioning public art, addressing practical concerns like decision-making, production, and installation. The course also engages with critical issues such as publicness, failure, the effects of climate change, and the privatization of space.
