Workshop: Propaganda Training
14 October 2025
Jonas Staal
CAPIm and Statens Konstråd (the Swedish Art Agency)
Gamlestadens Medborgarhus, Gothenburg
CAPIm’s Senior Guest Researcher Jonas Staal leads a workshop – that is also part of the Swedish Public Art Agency’s “Contemporary Art Days” – based on his propaganda research and organisational artwork that considers: What is propaganda, how does it operate in our present time, and what is the role of art and culture in it? How does propaganda research contribute to combating rising authoritarianism? The workshop balances theoretical analysis with physical training and collective strategising.
The Contemporary Art Days are a meeting place for people who work in the art field and want to develop it together with others. This is a professional conference and networking event that lasts three days (13–15 October). It is organised in collaboration between the Public Art Agency, the Gothenburg City Arts and Cultural Affairs Administration, the Västra Götaland Region Cultural Administration, the Centre for Art and the Political Imaginary, Göteborgs Konsthall, and Röda Sten Konsthall, the responsible organisation of the Gothenburg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA). The conference is arranged in connection with the 13th edition of GIBCA, which runs between 20 September and 30 November 2025.
The Contemporary Art Days take place every year and are part of the Public Art Agency’s commission to promote the development and spread of contemporary art and to strengthen art organisations. The target group for the Contemporary Art Days is: art galleries, art museums, networks of art actors, independent art actors, art strategists, curators, museum curators, art educators, art consultants, art developers and others who want to contribute to the development of the contemporary art ecosystem.
The Propaganda Training workshop is one of two workshops that CAPIm is doing in association with the Swedish Art Agency within the framework of the Contemporary Art Days 2025. The other workshop, with Jason E. Bowman and Julie Crawshaw, is on Organising for Self-Organisation. Both of these workshops are part of a strand of research on organisational imaginaries that was initiated in May 2025. If you are interested to know more about this work on organisational imaginaries, we invite you to attend a research workshop on 21 November 2025 that looks at Cases Studies in Organisational and Institutional Change, where we will outline this research strand in more detail.
Further information about the full programme and booking for the Contemporary Art Days will be available shortly via the Swedish Art Agency’s Website.
