Nicholas Mirzoeff (Webinar)

The CAPIm associated course Self-Organisation in Contemporary Arts will host an open public webinar with leading theorist of visual cultures Nicholas Mirzoeff who will address self-organisation via the non-human spontaneous organising inherent to murmurations. 

Professor Nicholas Mirzoeff’s scholarship is recognised as foundational to the advancement of the interdisciplinary field of Visual Cultures. A visual activist, Mirzoeff is chair of the Department of Media, Culture and Communication at New York University. His work takes place at the intercessions of race, politics and aesthetics and often interrogates how autonomy from complexes of authority may be asserted via countervisuality. Most recently Mirzoeff has paid attention to the threats of white domination to social justice (White Sight: Visual Politics and Practices of Whiteness, MIT Press. 2023); and to how anti-colonial ways of seeing, via images viewed outside Palestine, have informed a global uprising against the genocide.
