Two online events that mark the release of two new volumes on curating.

On the Curatorial

Online conversation, 23 February 17:30-18:30 CET

In an online conversation moderated by the poet and novelist Khashayar Naderehvandi, Carolina Rito and Mick Wilson will discuss the recently released On Discourse and the Curatorial. This is the first in a new series On the Curatorial from Floating Opera Press edited by Rito. The next volume in the series is Paul O’Neill’s Beyond Caring: Para-Hosting as Curatorial Escape. In this one-hour conversation, Rito and Wilson will discuss both the series and the first volume, as well as the wider development in publishing on questions of curating, research and the curatorial.

The newfound prominence of all manner of discursive formats—from public program seminars and symposia to thematically structured residencies to complex research trajectories and various ambitious publishing programs—indicates an impulse to promote discursive production in ways that go far beyond thematizing the visible in displayed works. These formats operate in ways no longer adequately described in the analysis of the scopic discipline of the 19th-century museum.  However, as has on occasion been remarked, there are other forms of discipline at work in the cultivation of discursive assembly and conversational exchange as curatorial and artistic strategies.

The post-exhibitionary condition in a post-political world

Online conversation, 24 February 17:30-18:30 CET

In the second of our Editorial Conversations, Cătălin Gheorghe and Mick Wilson discuss their co-edited open access volume Curating Beyond Exhibition: On the post-exhibitionary condition in a post-political world, the latest in the VECTOR series that includes previous titles such as Learning by Curating: Current trajectories in critical curatorial education (2022) and Exhibitionary Acts of Political Imagination (2021).

“Vector - critical research in context” is an experimental publication [intentionally left undefined] based on an open editorial concept, alternatively applied as “a book of artistic/curatorial research”, “a catalogue of critical art”, “an experimental artist’s edition”, “a critical reader” […]

Gheorghe and Wilson consider the role of independent presses and editorial practices in the development of artistic research. They also consider the central focus of the Curating Beyond Exhibition and what is at stake in ideas of the post-political, practices of the post-exhibitionary and their intersection. They briefly describe the contributions to the book made by Maria Hlavajova, Ronald Kolb, Vipash Purichanont, Saara Milderberg, Zian Chen, Andris Brinkmanis, Biljana Ciric and Raluca Voinea.

hinking at the intersection of different discourses and across different geographies of the political, the contributors formulate artistic and curatorial analyses and strategies that seek variously to disrupt, to renegotiate, to imagine and to activate the political present otherwise. These contributions avoid reductive or totalising historical and geopolitical imaginaries through their address to concrete practices and strategies, inflected with the rich specificity of different geopolitical positionings and artistic genealogies.
