Welcome to the annotated screening of Verses of Filth (2021), a 23-minute video by artist Naomi Rincón Gallardo. The screening will include direct annotations by Gallardo that explore and expand on the ideas behind the work. Inspired by the pre-Hispanic mortuary chant Tzocuicatl (chant of filth), the piece follows a scavenger and a group of underworld creatures as they reclaim body fragments and cultural debris, exploring themes of death, purification, and rebellion. The screening will be followed by a conversation with the artist.
Naomi Rincón Gallardo is known for her decolonial-queer approach to creating mythic counter-worlds in response to neocolonial realities. She incorporates elements of Mesoamerican cosmologies, speculative fiction, and decolonial feminisms in her work.
